Author’s Voice: An Interview About BLEAK HARBOR

January 19, 2019 By Bryan

I had great fun answering some challenging questions by Libby Fischer Hellmann on Author’s Voice, a video podcast that offers one-on-one interviews with authors. Libby and I talked about the bleakness of Bleak Harbor, multiple points-of-view, and how I transition from non-fiction to fiction. You can watch and listen here.

On Autism, Sexual Harassment and Other Sensitive Subjects

January 17, 2019 By Bryan

A few months ago, my friend Helene Cooper of The New York Times read an advance copy of my new novel, BLEAK HARBOR. She emailed me to say she liked the book and to ask, “Where do you come up with this shit?”

Good question for someone who has never been involved in pedophilia, sexual asphyxiation, suicide, or murder, except on the page. I talk about how I deal with potentially controversial topics–autism, @metoo, medical marijuana–without simply ripping stuff from the headlines.

You can read the entire piece here.

Great News: Steve Hamilton and Me in Traverse City

January 12, 2019 By Bryan

My pal Steve Hamilton, author of the Alex McKnight and Nick Mason series, will be chatting with me about books, writing, Michigan, and the Notre Dame-Michigan football rivalry in Traverse City, MI, Thursday, June 27, as part of the National Writers Series. Details here.

The National Writers Series is a year-round book festival and a destination for conversations with authors from all genres.  Hundreds of people attend these  events at the lovely City Opera House, and tens of thousands more listen to the conversations on a subsequent broadcast aired on Interlochen Public Radio and on community television.

Since Doug and Anne Stanton founded the Writers Series in 2009, they have awarded $42,000 in scholarships—three each year—to college-bound seniors and juniors. Winning a scholarship gives recipients a better chance of gaining entry into one of the country’s prestigious universities. The NWS also has developed a high school creative writing program in partnership with the public school district to provide a home for passionate writers.

Steve and I hope to see you there.
